Class Participation (30%)

In grading class participation, we are looking for the following indicators of quality:

bullet Be on time and present to all classes;
bullet Concise interventions/questions;
bullet Relevant to the ongoing discussions;
bullet Builds on or exemplify different aspects (such as culture) of other people’s comments;
bullet Includes feelings and evidence to support a position taken;
bullet Challenges, discusses and debates productively with others in the class, including the professor;
bullet Volunteering for in-class exercises or sharing of experiences; and
bullet Participation that contributes to the learning of others (including mine).

We welcome suggestions at any time on how the facilitation of the class can be improved to allow for broader and more productive class participation.  There will be cold calling, mainly for those who are perceived to participate less, even so the right to pass will be respected.

Journals (30%)

At the end of Days 1 & 2, you will have to prepare 3 small assignments for submission the next day: a preparation sheet, a debrief journal, and a feedback journal. Each assignment should be a maximum of 2 pages long and focus on one of the negotiations you did during the day. Below we better describe them:

  1. Preparation Sheet - though you will have prepared for a role-play during class time, you will only have about 30-40mins to do so. After you debrief the case in class, we want you to go back to that preparation sheet and "complete" it with your hindsight.

  2. Debrief Journal - Your negotiated results will NOT be graded against one another. Instead your debrief of your learnings should be your main focus. So to help you reflect and learn from one of your role-plays, you should discuss:
    •  One or two behaviors
    you did well and would like to replicate next time;
    •  One or two behaviors
    you did poorly and would like to improve next time; and
    •  How will implement said behaviors?
    •  Risk and rewards of these behaviors

  3. Feedback Journal - Very similar to the Debrief Journal, the Feedback Journal however will be given to your counterparty at the end of the day. We expect you to give candid feedback to your classmates, ad this will improve their self-awareness and performance. What you say about them will NOT impact THEIR grade, but YOURS! How well you describe their behavior and give them advice to improve will impact YOUR grade! The guidelines to writing such journal are similar to above:
    •  One or two behaviors your counterparty did well and would like to imitate next
        time; and
    •  One or two behaviors
    your counterparty did poorly and would like to help them
        improve next time
    •  How will implement said behaviors?
    •  Risk and rewards of these behaviors

Final Exam (40%)

For the Final Exam, you will be given a case to negotiate outside of class time and then asked to submit the same 3 assignments as the ones above, however your page limit will be increased to 4 for each of them.
